There’s a reason we have the best mums you can buy in Pittsburg, Kansas. OK, actually, there are several. We grow them outdoors to withstand the local weather conditions, from excessive heat and dry wind to humidity and rain. This makes them tough and able to withstand conditions at your house. Ask any botanist and they’ll tell you that plants that are grown locally thrive locally. We also keep a close eye on our mums as they grow and ensure with our irrigation system that each plant is getting just the right amount of water. Most mums bought at a big box store are grown with a lot of chemicals. Ours? Hardly any. Most mums grown at a box store must all be ready at the same time to insure they can ship them when they have them scheduled to ship. Our growing practices do not include tricking our mums to bloom earlier than they normally would. We like to say we grow ours with a lot of TLC instead of chemicals! We don't make them do things they normally wouldn't. And because of that, they’re better for the environment. We start planting plugs in June using an interval approach every few weeks so we have up to four crops by the time autumn arrives and you want that look that only mums can provide. We plant several different varieties of the same color because they don’t all bloom at the same time in the fall. Depending on the variety, they are ready from now through late October. This year, you can choose from three sizes: 4 ½-inch, 2 gallon, and 3 gallon “monster” mums. You also can choose from six colors: white, red, purple, yellow, bronze, and orange. We also use mums as a way to give back to our community: Each year, we provide fundraiser mums for the Pittsburg Family Y Academy of Dance, supplying over 2,100 mums this year! Get your mums from people you know and trust, people who live in your community and who are working hard every day to make sure what you buy is the best quality for the best price. It's really nice that you provide all this information about the mums. I have bought mums in the past from other places and I have lost all of them. This will be nice to know. Thanks so much!

Mums are generally not considered a hardy perennial. The growers classify them as tender. There are certain varieties hardier than others. Most of the mums you are going to buy are tender. They can come back and even for years but are not reliable. Tricks to getting fall mums to overwinter. Plant on the East or South side of a structure as this will help protect them from the cold. Plant them early when they are still growing, not when they are in full bloom. Leave old foliage on until spring to help protect roots from cold. Buy smaller plants like our 4 1/2" instead of our 2 and 3 gallon to plant to come back next year. Plant them in the ground they will almost never winter in any pot. I hope this helps.

I purchased two large mums from your greenhouse 4 years ago, planted them and they have wintered over very well. This year one is doing better than the other and the purple blooms are just now opening. They sit facing the South.
